Downpour In Los Barriles this Weekend

It poured this weekend in Los Barriles almost everyone stayed home and there was no much activity in town. the two arroyos flowed magnifientely, it was quite a majestic sight watching the controled flow of the water into the ocean.

This East Cape town and the surrounding hills turned very green. Colina del Sol really benefited from this downpour. The vegetation flourished and the grounds are even more dramatic than before. Because it is desert flora, just one major rain makes all the difference, which allows one to truly see and appreciate the natural beauty of the property. It is nature at its finest. Come see Colina del Sol for yourself, and get a sense of what it is like to dwell in the soul of Baja.

Colina del Sol - A Green, Eco-Friendly Development

Colina del Sol Los Barriles is part of the ecologically-conscious movement. Within each lot in the development, 60% remains intact with the other 40% to be used for building. This is done to protect the natural beauty of Baja California Sur, which is our main focus. Any displaced vegetation within the 40% allowed for building will be transplanted, housed and nurtured in our nursery. We are also cultivating our own supply of palo de arco trees, which will be used to provide Colina del Sol with palo de arco for palapas, fences, door accents, and other decorative purposes. Instead of using septic tanks, we have installed an underground treatment plant to treat all sewage; the gray water processed will be stored in one of our two water tanks and will be used for irrigation. The other water tank right beside it will store the fresh water from our own well. In the spirit of conserving water, we will be using artificial turf in our putting green located in the community center; once more people have moved into Colina del Sol, we will replace the artifical turf with real grass which will be irrigated with the gray water. Concrete light fixtures have been installed thoughout and will generate low-intensity lighting to allow for a full appreciation of the beautiful nighttime skies in Los Barriles, where the star constellations and full moons are unparalleled and at their brightest. Become a part of this East Cape community in Colina del Sol Los Barriles, and dwell in the soul of Baja.

Changes in Bar/Restaurant Scene in Los Barriles

There are several changes taking place in the bar and restaurant scene in Los Barriles:

For one, Smokey's Grill & Cantina, located at the Smoke House, will soon be open and will be a very welcome addition to this town. They will have a full bar including draft beer, and will serve hamburgers, smoked fish sandwiches, grilled chicken salad, fish & chips, soup of the day, and plenty of appetizers. They will be open 7 days a week, 11:00am-11:00pm. We are all looking forward to opening day!

Chef Danny, the chef at Palmas de Cortez Hotel, has decided to pursue his career in the U.S. after many years of dedication to this local establishment. It is sad to see him go. We will all miss him.

Scott, from Buzzards Bay Cantina, has sold his establishment after years of owning it. The new owner is expected to be here in about a week to take over. We welcome him, wish him success and hope he does as good a job as Scott did as patron.

Come to this East Cape town in Baja, and witness these changes firsthand.

Fourth of July Quiet, Local Mexicans Celebratory

Fourth of July in Los Barriles was actually kind of quiet as far as celebrations go. Most of the excitement in town this weekend was centered around the basketball court, which hosted a dance with live music on Saturday night. Local Mexicans, and those from nearby towns, showed up to enjoy the show. They were definitely in a festive mode. What's interesting about this town is that when there is a celebration, such as a wedding or a quinceañera, it is held at the basketball court and the whole town is invited. Music can be heard for blocks and blocks and the event goes on until the early morning hours. It is a time for everyone to come together and share in the joy of the special day. Although people are happy and in general on their best behavior, there are still police officers around in case they are needed to make it safe and enjoyable for everyone.

When it comes to local festivities, this East Cape town in Baja really knows how to bring the whole town together to celebrate.

Wine Tasting Comes to Los Barriles

Los Barriles is moving up in the social world. The Loft, the new wine and cigar bar at the Palmas de Cortez Hotel, was inaugurated on May 15. They will be hosting a wine tasting every Friday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Their first one was last Friday and it was a wonderful experience! Pepe greets you as you arrive, and both he and Francis, his French associate, serve you as they describe the wines, which they pair with just the right cheeses and olives. The background music adds to the ambience of this cozy upstairs locale. The Loft is open daily from 5:00pm to 9:00pm (closed Mondays), and allows for a relaxed social gathering, as well as a semi-private business setting. Their wine selection is varied, and includes Mexican wines; their cigar selection offers many from which to choose. It is truly a welcome venue in this secluded part of the East Cape.

Full Moon in Los Barriles

What a spectacular moon there was last night! As it came up from the east over the Sea of Cortez, it was a reddish orange blaze. As it rose into the starry sky, it changed into a yellow glow and as it rose even more it had a bright white shining aura. Sitting at the beach and seeing the reflection of the moon on the water just made me want to stay there all night; it was a feeling a being one with this celestial being. I've traveled the world and can truly say that I've never seen such breathtaking moons as in this East Cape town of Los Barriles. I've sometimes wondered what Galileo would have discovered if he had been able to look up to the heavens from this part of the world.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration Tonight in Los Barriles

Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated in a big way tonight at Tio Pablo's. Karaoke has been changed from the usual Tuesday night to tonight to be included in the festivities. There will be free shooters passed around so that everyone can get into the mood. It seems that everyone will be there, locals and tourists alike. Speaking of tourists, there was a lot of national tourism in Los Barriles this weekend (some have extended their stay until tomorrow and I'm sure will be at Tio Pablo's tonight). The reason for all the national tourism is that there were several holidays in a row, beginning with last Wednesday, Día del Niño, last Thursday, Día del Trabajo, and today, Cinco de Mayo. Then this coming Saturday, May 10th, we have Día de las Madres. Wow, lots of reasons to get into the spirit that this time of year offers. And what better place to spend this time of year than in Los Barriles, East Cape?!

Los Barriles - A Gem Worth Investing In

Baja is unique in the way the desert meets the sea, and what a sea it is, this Sea of Cortez that Jacques Cousteau called the "aquarium of the world". It not only offers an abundance of fishing but it's beauty is captivating. The view of the Sea of Cortez just as one is arriving in Los Barriles from Buena Vista is one of the most spectacular views in the East Cape region. No wonder people return to Los Barriles time and time again. Some visit for a few days, some spend many months and others simply just move here. It helps that real estate investment in this East Cape seaside town is still affordable, especially when compared to Cabo. Los Barriles is truly a gem worth visiting, but most of all, worth investing in.

Exciting News! First Sale of Latest Model, Casa Estrella!

Exciting News!!!! Announcing our first sale of Casa Estrella, our latest model which just came out in the market!!! We knew it would do well, but we didn't expect it to do well this quickly. It is definitely a very popular model which has been very well received. It will resemble our current models, Casa del Sol and Casa de la Luna, in that it will integrate into the natural setting of the development, yet it will have a personality all its own. It is our most affordable model as well, with prices starting at $209,500 USD for a 1,555 sq ft house with 1 bedroom/2 bathrooms; or $235,000 USD for a 1,785 sq ft house with 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms. Believe it or not, these prices include the house and the lot. Remarkable for a location such as Colina del Sol with ocean views, stone roads, underground services, underground water treatment plant, community center, nursery for displaced vegetation, etc. It is truly amazing everything that the developer has put into this property. Imagine belonging to this community in the East Cape, where the main focus is to preserve the natural beauty of Baja California Sur, and where the value of your property will undoubtedly appreciate before your very eyes. The time to invest in Baja real estate is NOW, the place to invest is HERE at Colina del Sol Los Barriles.

Desert Vegetation in Full Bloom at Colina del Sol Los Barriles

The desert vegetation at Colina del Sol in Los Barriles is in full bloom and is truly fascinating to see - the cardones with yellow blossoms, the biznagas with yellow fruit, the viejitos with little red flowers and the ciruelos with reddish brown fruit. And it hasn't even rained yet. These indigenous plants are very precious and need to be kept intact. At Colina del Sol that is precisely what will be done. There is a nursery already integrated into the development where any vegetation that is to be displaced when building will be transplanted and cared for there. The focus at Colina del Sol is to preserve the natural beauty of Baja California Sur. It thus makes it an ideal setting for those wanting to invest in a home in Mexico in the East Cape of Baja where one can co-exist with nature, where homes seem to be a natural extension of the landscape. If we all do our part, as we are doing at Colina del Sol, we can all enjoy nature at its finest.

A Day Spent in the Sea of Cortez

It seems like most people I talked to this afternoon in Los Barriles spent part of their day today in the Sea of Cortez, either fishing, swimming or snorkeling. Everyone was in a cheerful mood, with their bronze tans and relaxed auras. And right around now, everyone is getting ready for happy hour, the time to enjoy margaritas, beers, tequilas, etc., either at one of the local bars or on their palapa terraces. Add to this the spectacular Baja sunsets. Then imagine repeating today's activities tomorrow, and then the day after. Life is tough in this East Cape town of Los Barriles.

Another Gorgeous Day in Los Barriles, East Cape, Baja

Another gorgeous day in Los Barriles, East Cape, as I sit here enjoying the view of the beautiful, tranquil waters of the Sea of Cortez. No wonder Baja California Sur is such a popular destination. With Cabo being as saturated and congested as it is, Los Barriles seems to be the destination of choice for many wanting a more relaxed atmosphere; a rustic lifestyle combined with natural beauty at its finest. For many, it is a dream location for Mexican real estate investment, with much more affordable property compared to its very busy neighbor to the south of the Baja peninsula. At Colina del Sol Los Barriles, it is no exception! Lots and custom homes are very reasonably priced. Add to this the glistening ocean views to the east of the development, and the mountain views to the west, which offer a sense of peace and tranquility serenely felt especially at this time of the day, and you have a place where you can truly dwell in the soul of Baja.

Invest in Baja Real Estate on the East Cape in Los Barriles

Today could not have been a nicer day in Los Barriles. The weather was just ideal! This part of the East Cape in Baja California Sur by the Sea of Cortez is the place to be. No wonder so many people came out to Colina del Sol today. I guess everyone is on the same wavelength, wanting to invest in Baja real estate before prices start going up. Oceanview lots at our property start at $75,000 USD for approximately 1/3 acre parcels. We can build a home for you starting at just $209,500 USD for a 1 bedroom/2 bathroom house, and $235,000 for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom house. These prices include the cost of the house and the lot! Springtime in Los Barriles, New Model Home Almost Completed

Today is a cloudy day in Los Barriles. It seems as if it's going to rain, although it's not the rainy season yet. Spring is very evident, though, especially in seeing the pretty yellow birds building their nests on the fringes of my office palapa roof palm leaves. Visits to the property have been steady. Casa de la Luna, our second model home, is almost finished and is taking shape very nicely. The courtyard seems to be everyone's favorite area, where everything is being built around the existing vegetation, such as the elephant trees. The rooftop terrace will also be a cool part of the house, with beautiful views and a lot of space. I'm really looking forward to seeing this model completed.

Windsports Ending, Sportfishing Beginning in Los Barriles

This morning was a peaceful one to wake up to; the full moon from last night must have had that effect on it. I think it also affected the desert, as it seems exceptionally alive today. The day has become hazy but hopefully will clear up soon. There is no wind, fortunately for some, and unfortunately for others, such as those who enjoy the windsports. The windsports season is just about over, but the fishing season is about to begin. In speaking with the local fisherman, they are getting their gear ready. I have already been invited on a few fishing trips, and I think it's time to become a part of that group. The local horses also seem to want some activity, so I might become part of the horseback riding group as well; either take a ride through the arroyos to the waterfalls, or go to the beach and ride along the shore. That must be a really nice way to end the day. The ATVs are always in operation, enjoyed by everyone - young, middleaged, seniors - but mainly, the young at heart.

Sunday Morning in Los Barriles

Today is a beautiful day to be in Los Barriles. Blue sky, no hangover, no wind, lots of people having coffee and breakfast at the Roadrunner Internet Cafe. Lots of ATVs passing by with smiling faces on everyone. Yesterday, half the town came out to the opening of Pizzeria di Don Roberto. Where else would you find so many people attending that type of an event?! It was a success and a much needed establishment. The almost full moon last night was breathtaking over the Sea of Cortez, and the weather could not have been better. Tonight's full moon I can hardly wait for.

Real Estate Pros Impressed with Colina del Sol

This past weekend approximately 100 real estate representatives toured the beach view properties at Colina del Sol, an East Cape residential development. The agents, from the La Paz, San Jose and Cabo San Lucas real estate markets, had the opportunity to become familiar with the 200 home site project, just north of the small town of Los Barriles. They also toured the recently completed, 2046s/f Casa de Sol, the flagship home and one of three floor plans being built by Dec Developments on the site.

The Casa de Sol model was completed in January 2008 and has been tastefully designed to enhance the outdoor living lifestyle. Some of the agents had visited the property during the construction phase of the model and were impressed with the openness provided by the expansive windows and doorwalls that bring the outdoors, indoors. The unique design of the home gives nearly every room two outside facing walls and angles of view into the desert landscaped lot surrounding.

The agents enjoyed the breeze from the Sea of Cortez, visible from the roof top terrace area on the Casa de Sol model. This particular model home was furnished with an entertainment/wet bar area, where the residents will be able to enjoy a morning coffee and watch the sunrise over the Sea of Cortez or a frosty beverage in the cool of the evening as the sun sets to the west behind the Sierra Lagunas. The palapa roof overhead gives the roof top terrace a very ‘Baja feel’ and makes it a very comfortable place to catch a siesta and escape the sun in the heat of the day.

The Casa del Sol model embraced the desert lifestyle further with the addition of the optional pool in the courtyard. The focal point of the desert landscaped core of the residence, the pool and its cool reflections are visible from nearly every room in the home. The deck area is enclosed on three sides by the house giving a modicum of privacy for poolside sunbathing.

To enhance the East Cape Experience, the agents toured the 200 lots on ATV’s and 4WD carts. Los Barriles embraces the iconic Baja lifestyle, where the mom is just as likely to be the one to hop aboard the ATV to run to the store. In addition to providing fun for the touring agents, the ATV’s provided ready access to the large property and enabled the tour to visit the Community Center, which is nearing completion and the Nursery, which will conserve protected plants during the development process of the property.

The agents also visited the water treatment and water storage facilities located at opposite ends of the property. In an effort to conserve Baja’s precious resource of water, each lot will be plumbed with fresh water, for household use and recycled grey water for irrigation purposes. As fascinating as the water resource tour was, many of the agents found more glee in finding full throttle on the ATV’s on the roadways in between.

The final stop on the ATV property tour was the Casa de la Luna model home now under construction. With the structure complete and interior work begun, the agents had a good idea of the functionality of the L shaped 1477s/f model home, which will share the Casa de Sol’s openness and incorporation of the outdoor environment. Expected to be completed by mid May, the model will have a rooftop view of the Sea of Cortez to the east.

Back at the sales office the agents parked their ATV’s and enjoyed a lunch and a selection of margaritas, beer and white wine, catered by El Barrilito, a restaurant in central Los Barriles a few miles away. During the feed, violin artist Alex DuPuis entertained with classical tunes as well as some down home fiddling.

Afterwards, Yoli Georgelos, the on-site representative for ReMax Del Mar, presented the basic facts about the property and the model homes to the guests. ReMax Del Mar has the exclusive right to sell the project, with a home office located in La Paz. Developer Carlos Estrada then was introduced and proceeded to outline the goals of the project, and sale potential for the visiting agents.

Finally, Sr. Estrada presented the newest model of home to be available soon for construction at Colina del Sol, the Casa Estrella. Casa Estrella will offer one and two bedroom designs and a smaller footprint to provide a most modest investment for living in this sportsman’s paradise. With a starting price on the entry level lot the Estrella homes will begin at $209,500 for a spacious 1 bedroom/2 bathroom model and will begin at $235,000 for a spacious 2 bedroom/2 bathroom model.

Custom home plans will also be included in the project, falling within the CC&R guidelines of the development. The agents were informed as to the unlimited time to construct policy, generous commission and payment options as well as other established guidelines of the project.

Following the presentation the guests boarded their buses or vans for the respective destinations and return to their offices in La Paz, San Jose and Cabo San Lucas. Dec Developments and ReMax Del Mar felt confident they had conveyed the real estate investment value of Colina de Sol. With the offering of the Casa de Sol, Casa de la Luna and Casa Estrella the development literally offers Baja real estate investors the sun, the moon and the stars.

Casa del Sol has just been completed and is fully furnished

I am pleased to announce that Casa del Sol in Colina del Sol Los Barriles has just been completed and fully furnished! Only the appliances are pending and they will be delivered and installed by the end of next week, the middle of February. The renderings and brochures of Casa del Sol do not do it justice, as one needs to enter it to envision what it would be like to dwell in the sol of Baja. The high ceilings and large windows as one enters the house and walks into the living room give a feeling of spaciousness and openness, and make for a very inviting setting. The stone accents give the house a warm touch.

The polished, colored concrete finishes in the kitchen and throughout the house and the terrace are rustic yet appealing and contrast very well with the wood work used for the doors, cabinets and closets. The kitchen has an adjacent pantry with plenty of shelving, and adjacent to the pantry is the laundry room. The dining room looks out to the desert vegetation and to the Sea of Cortez, as does the master bedroom. The three bedrooms, and their respective bathrooms, are very well distributed to allow for privacy in each of these living quarters. The half bathroom is located in the living room/dining room/kitchen area. The courtyard has a turquoise pool with a pool deck area, an outdoor shower, a cactus garden, a fire place and an artisanal perimeter wall made from hand-cut stone that is from the region, with wood accents.

The stairs leading up to the terrace are made from palm tree trunks, and the railing is made from cholla wood. These two features add a very creative touch. Once upstairs, one feels like spending the day there. The panoramic view of the Sea of Cortez to the east and of the mountains to the west is truly appreciated. The barbecue grill and bar area are the perfect accessories for a get-together with family and friends. The furniture used throughout the house and on the terrace has been artistically chosen with an eye for detail, and blends perfectly with the architectural design of Casa del Sol and its natural outdoor setting.
Casa de la Luna, the second model home that we will be showcasing, is already under construction and will be completed within the next four months.

Colina del Sol, the only development of this kind currently in Los Barriles, is taking shape more than ever. Visit us and be a part of this community, where the natural beauty of Baja California Sur is preserved, and at its finest.
Come, dwell in the sol of Baja.

East Cape Residential Development

Colinas del Sol is a 200 lot residential development in the sportsmans paradise of East Cape in Baja California Sur. At Colina del Sol improved residential lots and three custom home designs are available for those looking to make a real estate investment in Baja Sur. The East Cape has long been known as a Sportsman’s’ Paradise for great fishing, windsurfing, kiting and more can now become home to those looking to relocated to Mexico and enjoy the relaxed Baja lifestyle with an ocean view of the Sea of Cortez.

The East Cape region of Baja has long been a favorite of North Americans looking for year round real estate or a second home that embraces the Baja California Sur lifestyle. The East Cape earned the nickname a “Sportsman’s Paradise” decades ago, for the fantastic sport fishing in the Sea of Cortez. Early visitors to the area included John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. Spanning the western entrance to the Sea of Cortez, the blue green waters along East Cape’s shores are the first heat up for spring fishing and the last to go cold in the late autumn.

Rich in local vegetation like Cardon cactus, Palo Blanco and Elephant trees, the developers are conserving these natural treasures or relocating them within the property to maintain the authentic look and feel that attracted people to the region in the first place. A special nursery is nearing completion on the property to nurture vegetation that may be temporarily transplanted during construction. Valued plants on your lot will be moved, cared for, and then returned to your property once the construction is completed.
